Researching a Used Car
If you decide you want to purchase a used car, you can buy from private sellers, used car
lots, superstores, new car dealerships (who usually have many trade-in vehicles), rental
car lots, and auctions. Check out internet listings as well. Once you conatact the owner
of your potential vehichle, here are some important things to find out:
- The price and condition of the vehicle.
- If they are the first owner.
- How long they've owned it.
- Why they are selling it.
- How long they've been trying to sell it.
- If the owner is a private seller or a dealer.
- If they have service records for the vehicle. (If they haven't kept these records, you
may be getting a lemon. Get an online lemon check to be sure.)
Once you've narrowed down your search to a few models, you'll want to test drive all
the vehicles you are considering. As you examine the vehicle, look for:
- Safety features
- Comfort
- Cleanliness
- Interior rips
- Rust on the axels or body
- A properly working exhaust system
