Winterizing
- Winterize your car each fall.
- Flush the cooling system and add new coolant. Coolant is a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze
and water.
- Keep the windshield wiper fluid level high! Use a mixture of water and the blue wiper
detergent.
- Get the battery load tested. Load testing determines the condition of the battery.
- If your battery is more than 4 years old, replace it before cold weather sets in.
- Inspect the belts and replace, if needed.
- Replace worn or bald tires. Switch to snow tires, if it snows in your area.
- Make sure the lights, heater and defroster work.
- Carry a "winter emergency kit" in the trunk of your car: shovel, kitty litter
(for traction, in case you get stuck in the snow), tire chains, ice scraper, flashlight
with fresh batteries, jumper cables, can of "lock de-icer" spray and wool
blanket.
- Keep the gas tank as full as possible to avoid moisture that can freeze in the gas
lines.
