| Selling checklist |
| So you've decided to sell your car. Taking a little time to prepare your car for sale
can help you get your full asking price. |
|
| Appearance |
| Looks are important. It's the first thing a buyer will notice. Thoroughly clean your
car inside and out. Give it a wax and vacuum, clean the ashtrays, even the trunk. Consider
cleaning the engine with a degreaser. |
|
| Condition |
| Do a general maintenance check. Replace oil and all other fluids. Check tire pressure.
Keep records of what you've done. |
|
| Records |
| In a folder, gather all maintenance records, the owner's manual, registration and
title. |
|
| Pricing |
| Check the a used car guide. See how much you could get for a trade-in. Check prices at
local lots for your make and model. Settle on a price between a trade-in price and a
market price. Be flexible. |
|
| What if my car's not paid off yet? |
| You can still sell it, but you'll need to talk to your lender about your options. |
|
| Found a buyer! |
| Be firm about accepting only cash or a certified check. Don't agree to a "I'll
pay you every month" deal. Write a receipt for both you and the buyer. Include all
pertinent information such as the names, addresses and phone numbers of both parties,
vehicle identification numbers, selling price, make, model, and year. Include a statement
that the car is being sold as is. |
